Anyway, I was doing a search on sourdough recipes one day and came across a blog that mentioned Friends of Carl free sourdough starter. I decided to look it up and I was floored. The story is fabulous. Carl Griffith's starter came from the Oregon Trail in 1847 and it is still being produced and shared freely today.
If you are interested, you can follow the link above and find out how to get your own with just a stamped self-addressed envelope. Mine took about 4 weeks to get here from the time I mailed my request.
They send you a snack sized ziploc bag with dried starter in it. You can print off instructions from the website on how to reconstitute it. It works! Today I made sourdough pancakes using some of it. I am not a big fan of regular pancakes because I don't like the gritty feeling they leave in my mouth, and I always feel crummy after eating them. I think they swell up or something. Anyway, sourdough pancakes are different. They are awesome. Really.
Next I'm going to try sourdough bread. I'll try to remember to take pictures :)
Thanks for stopping by!
My sister gave me some sourdough starter several years ago that sounds a lot like what you got from Carl. I have used this starter in the 2004 and 2007 International Dutch Oven World Championships. In the 2004 competition, the judges commented "best sourdough flavor" for my herbed sourdough dinner rolls.
ReplyDeleteSourdough is wonderful!
I just love sourdough bread! Thank you for the link, I think I will see if I can't start my own "tradition"!
ReplyDeleteMy wife made her own starter recently and the bread absolutely delicious. Very healthy, especially for diabetics. The acidity of the sourdough lets it break down slower in the system.--johnnyb
ReplyDeleteLOVE sourdough. I have super old starter my mom gave me from when she moved to Alaska 40 years ago. That lady had had it for 20 already or something. We love the sourdough pancakes the best, my dad made them every Sunday growing up.

I just got mine, they were going to mail it for free to Ireland but I sent a donation to cover the extra mailing costs and I'm so glad they sent this. The taste is wonderful and for the first time in years I had a sour dough sandwich with American Style bacon and grilled cheese. Husband was so excited he raced the envelop upstairs. A hint, use the OLD directions with potato water (water you cooked potatoes in) and a little sugar, I'm sure you don't "have" too, like the modern directions mention; but I know how starters work and the potato water gives a head's up for the dormant yeasts. - Melodi in Ireland
