A Little of This and That

We had a blast on the 4th of July.  We went to the Lawn Mower Races!  Honest.  The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) held their races in our area this year.  What a hoot!  We truly enjoyed it. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever go to the Lawn Mower Races, and have fun on top of that!

I've been on furlough all this week.  Everyone in our office, from the President of the company on down, have been taking a weeks furlough every month for the past 13 months. The time off has become a treasured blessing for me, however, the 25% cut in pay has been a wee bit painful.  Okay, a lot painful.  One thing I have learned is that I really want to stay at home.  I am not in a position to retire yet and it is my own fault.  I always thought I would die of boredom if I didn't work.  What was I thinking????  I have so much to do at home there are not enough hours in the day.  My husband likes me being home too.  He has a nice dinner almost every night, the house is clean, etc...  When I'm gone 10 hours a day there is not much energy left when I get home.  Our evening meals are thrown together or we go out and the dishes usually wait till I get home the following day.  (I'm not really a slob if that's what you're thinking.  I'm just tired.)

Today I was able to begin harvesting radishes.  They are awesome!  All of the seeds we got from Baker Creek have been doing better than we expected.

Our lettuce finally bolted so I pulled it and gave it to the chickens.  I'll replant when it gets cooler.  I don't know what to do with the cabbage that "isn't".  I have lot's of huge leaves but no cabbage head in the center.  Guess I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. My wife and I had planned to retire early, but 2008 put paid to those intentions. She teaches because we wouldn't have any health insurance if she didn't. I used to think I'd be at loose ends without an office to go to. Not so.

  3. My son will have to see these pictures tomorrow. We have a little local track that has tractor races and he seems to have a bug to want to do this. We told him someday when he grows up and wants to soup up his own lawnmower is fine with us. lol :)

    Looks like fun though!

  4. Enjoy the time off. Since I'm self-employed I get very little; my boss is a butt hole.
Sure is a lot of pretty red hair at the top of the page.

  5. Stephen - Sorry about your boss. I am really blessed that mine is great.
Thanks for the compliment on the hair. My Mom is in the middle and my younger sister is on the right :)

  6. Glad to know I'm not the only one who's tired after a 10-hour day. My husband works shorter hours than I do and I think he sometimes gets exasperated with me when I get home and don't feel like working on anything.

My radishes (also seeds from Baker Creek) didn't do well this year. I got lots of radish greens but few radishes. I also haven't gotten any cabbage heads, or broccoli or cauliflower for that matter. I'm sure it's because of my inexperience--I probably planted too late or something.

My husband was furloughed two days a month for almost a year. It was a 10 perent pay cut for him. We both breathed a sigh of relief when the furlough ended. Hopefully yours won't last much longer!

  7. So dry here that my tomatoes bloomed, but no fruit at all! And my cukes were bitter. Loved the pics of the races!
